The Ontario Ministry of the Environment web site includes recent policy papers and news releases, and access to some many policies and guidelines, including the updated Guideline for Use at Contaminated Sites.


In Canada

Alberta Environmental Appeal Board.

British Columbia Department of the Environment
Includes 1995 enforcement and compliance reports.

Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment
Canada's organization for multi-jurisdictional cooperation on environmental issues (at least in theory). 

Commission for Environmental Cooperation
The NAFTA commission on environmental cooperation and enforcement between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Here you can find several reports to the House of Commons on, among other things, environmental management systems for government.

Industry Canada
The Environmental Affairs page, includes excellent links to environmental industry, export, and policy sites in Canada and elsewhere.

The reports of Brian Emmett, Canada's Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

Manitoba Department of the Environment

National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy
A federal agency devoted to sustainable development.

National Pollutant Release Inventory
The federal Department of the Environment's report on 1995 emissions of over 100 key containments, listing quantities and sources. Canada's Big Three polluters are Celanese Canada Inc., Bayer Rubber Co., and Pétrochimie Coastal du Canada.

Environment Quebec (In French)

Transport Canada
Transportation of Dangerous Goods, on the Transport Canada web site, includes the proposed "clear language" version of the TDG regulations.


In the U.S.

U.S. EPA
EPA public access home page, now including Title 40, the environmental subset of the 1995 Code of Federal Regulations.

Fed World
A "one-Stop" shop for the U.S. government (when they're open). It's a good place to find ancillary environmental info not found at EPA sites (e.g., hazardous materials transportation/packaging regs, OSHA/safety regs, nuclear/radioactive waste, etc.).

Environmental Treaties and Resource Indicators
This service is provided by the Consortium for Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It includes:

  • The complete set of national resource indicators used in the World Resource Institute's World Resources 1996-1997 (145 additional variables for all nations of the world)
  • An on-line thematic guide that discusses how environmental treaties and national resource indicators, including remotely sensed data, can be used to help understand key issues related to the human dimensions of global environmental change
  • Environmental treaties, including bi-lateral environmental agreements between the US and Canada plus a number of significant environmental declarations by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)
  • Updated treaty status data from the World Conservation Union (IUCN).

European Environment Agency (no link)
European Commission, a major driver of environmental regulation in Europe, with increasing influence over national governments.

UNEP
An excellent site that includes links to the key international environmental conventions.
